The Waterloo Institute for Social Innovation and Resilience (WISIR) is a leading research institution dedicated to generating trans- and inter-disciplinary knowledge about social innovations and the social innovation process. Established in 2009 by Frances Westley, WISIR's approach is built on collaborative research and projects that bridge University of Waterloo faculties and departments, engage researchers from around the world, and connect with social innovators in other sectors. The institute seeks to mobilize this knowledge through a range of curriculum offerings and training opportunities, both within and outside of a university setting. WISIR's work focuses on enhancing the self-governance capacity of the social finance ecosystem in Canada through decolonial approaches to systems mapping, principles-focused evaluation, and tailored learning initiatives. By navigating the complex relationships between different parts of the social innovation ecosystem, WISIR aims to unlock the transformative potential of social finance. The institute has released a series of mini maps that help to explain the relationships between different parts of the Investment Readiness Program (IRP) ecosystem, and its Transdisciplinary Systemic Innovation Lab is dedicated to generating inter-disciplinary knowledge about social innovations and their processes.
