Underwhelming Experience at Wonderment: Where Inclusivity Meets Chaos

I'm not sure what I was expecting from Chris Fitchew's Wonderment, but the actual experience was a jarring mix of confusion and disappointment. As someone who's attended several festivals and events centered around joy and connection, I was excited to see how Wonderment would live up to its promise. Unfortunately, the execution fell flat. The performances, while energetic, felt disjointed and lacked a clear narrative thread. The immersive experiences, which I had been looking forward to, were instead confusing and poorly signposted. I found myself wandering around, trying to make sense of the various activities and installations, but ultimately feeling like an outsider looking in. The tea ceremony, Chalice in Wonderland, which had been touted as a highlight, was overcrowded and felt more like a gimmick than a genuine attempt at fostering connection. Perhaps the most disappointing aspect was the lack of diversity in the actual programming, despite the emphasis on inclusivity. It felt like the same voices and perspectives were being amplified, without much room for new or marginalized viewpoints. As a neurodiverse individual, I had been drawn to the promise of neurodiversity being nurtured, but what I found was a lack of consideration for different needs and abilities. The whole experience felt like a messy, albeit well-intentioned, attempt at creating something meaningful. With some more attention to detail, clearer communication, and a genuine commitment to inclusivity beyond just rhetoric, Wonderment could potentially live up to its lofty ideals. Until then, I'd caution others to temper their expectations.
