The George Henry White Fund is dedicated to preserving and promoting the legacy of George Henry White, a pioneering African American politician, lawyer, and educator. Born in North Carolina, White rose to prominence as a graduate of Howard University in 1877 and went on to serve in both houses of the North Carolina legislature. He later became an elected state solicitor for 8 years and was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives from North Carolina's Second District in 1896. During his time in Congress, White was a strong advocate for the rights of African Americans, authoring a bill to outlaw lynching and standing against the erosion of political rights. After leaving politics, White built an economic power base for people of color in Philadelphia, PA, where he ran his own law firm, founded the People's Savings Bank, and managed a land development company, helping black citizens become owners of land, homes, and businesses in Whitesboro, NJ. The George Henry White Fund aims to raise awareness of White's life and legacy through various initiatives, including screenings and expansion of the GHW American Phoenix DVD, installation of a headstone at GHW's grave site, and establishment of the GHW Community Memorial Center in Bladen County, NC.
