About This Business

The League for Animal Protection of Huntington, Inc. (LAP) is a non-profit organization dedicated to the rescue, care, and rehabilitation of stray, abandoned, and abused animals in Huntington Township. Established in 1973, LAP operates the Grateful Paw Cat Shelter, a cage-free refuge that provides a temporary home for kittens and cats. All felines in the shelter are vet checked, FELV and FIV tested, inoculated, and spayed or neutered before being placed for adoption. In addition to cat adoption, LAP also assists the Town of Huntington in their dog placement program. Volunteers from LAP evaluate, exercise, socialize, train, and groom dogs housed in the shelter, with some dogs being placed in foster care until they find a permanent home. The organization relies solely on contributions and is managed and staffed by dedicated volunteers. LAP's goal is to continue its crucial work on behalf of all animals that have passed through its doors. The Grateful Paw Cat Shelter is located at 104 Deposit Rd., E. Northport, NY 11731, and is open Tuesday through Friday from 12:30 pm to 4:30 pm and Saturday through Sunday from noon to 4 pm. The Town of Huntington Animal Shelter, where LAP assists with dog adoption, is located at 106 Deposit Rd., E. Northport, 11731, and is open Monday through Friday from 8 am to 6 pm and Saturday through Sunday from 9 am to 4 pm. For those interested in adopting a cat, they can call 631-757-4517 or email [email protected]. For dog adoption, they can call 631-757-9373 or email [email protected]. LAP also offers a help line for families with financial need, TNR information, and trap rental services. To become a volunteer, one can call 631-757-4517 or email [email protected]. With its commitment to animal welfare and rehabilitation, LAP continues to make a difference in the lives of animals in need.

Disheartening Experience at Grateful Paw Cat Shelter

I visited the Grateful Paw Cat Shelter last weekend, hoping to find a new furry friend to join my family. Unfortunately, my experience was a letdown. The shelter itself seemed clean and well-maintained, but the overall atmosphere felt somewhat disorganized. The volunteer I interacted with, although well-intentioned, seemed overwhelmed and didn't have all the information I needed about the cats available for adoption. I was particularly interested in learning more about their socialization process and how they prepare the cats for new homes, but the details provided were vague. What bothered me the most, however, was the limited interaction time with the cats. I understand the need for ensuring the cats' well-being, but as a potential adopter, I felt rushed and couldn't get a true sense of the cats' personalities. Perhaps with more volunteers or a more streamlined process, the experience could be improved. Despite the mission of The League for Animal Protection of Huntington being close to my heart, my visit to the Grateful Paw Cat Shelter left me feeling somewhat disappointed and uncertain about the adoption process. I hope in the future, they can address these issues and provide a more welcoming and informative experience for potential adopters.
