About This Business

Lakewood Golf Course, nestled in the upper Kennebec Valley on Route 201 in Madison, Maine, is an 18-hole par 72 course that has been a hidden gem for golf enthusiasts since its establishment in 1925. The course is divided into two distinct parts: the original nine holes, built in the early 1920s as part of the Lakewood Colony summer resort, which boasts a classic links feel with a perfect balance of challenge and playability, and the back nine, designed by Phil Wogan and completed in 1995, which is a parkland course carved out of the dense Maine woods. This meticulously maintained course combines well-designed holes, including Maine's only Par 6, with breathtaking scenery, providing golfers of all skill levels with a memorable experience. The 6,279-yard course, surrounded by white pines and offering stunning mountain views, is both challenging and welcoming. Lakewood Golf Course is not only a great place to enjoy a round of golf but also a wonderful spot to spend a peaceful afternoon appreciating the natural beauty of Maine. The course is conveniently located near several local attractions, including white water rafting and the Lakewood Inn and Theater, making it an ideal destination for those looking to combine golf with other activities. In addition to golf, the course also offers Nordic skiing, snowshoeing, and fat biking trails in the winter months, providing year-round entertainment for outdoor enthusiasts. The Nine and Wine event, held on the last Friday of every month, is another unique offering, with proceeds going towards the Jim Browne Foundation. For those interested in competitive golf, the course hosts various tournaments, including the 2 Person Scramble. With its rich history, beautiful landscapes, and variety of activities, Lakewood Golf Course is a must-visit destination for anyone looking to experience the best of Maine's golfing and outdoor recreation. As the course celebrates its 100-year anniversary, it continues to be a beloved part of the community, offering great rates, including $30 for 9 holes walking and $49 for 18 holes walking, making it an accessible and enjoyable experience for all. Whether you're a seasoned golfer or just looking for a new adventure, Lakewood Golf Course invites you to come and discover why it's considered one of the area's finest golf courses.

The 6,279-Yard Disappointment

As an avid golfer, I was excited to try out Lakewood Golf Course, but unfortunately, it didn't live up to my expectations. The course was beautifully described, with its classic links feel and parkland design, but the reality was far from it. The original nine holes, built in the 1920s, were tight and winding, with some holes feeling like they were just squeezed into the available space. And don't even get me started on the back nine - it was like they took every cliché from modern golf course design and mashed them all together into a messy, uncohesive whole. The Par 6 was a joke, feeling like a gimmick rather than a genuine challenge. And the scenery, while pretty, couldn't make up for the lackluster course design. The Nordic skiing, snowshoeing, and fat biking trails in the winter months sounded nice, but I wasn't there for that. The Nine and Wine event, with proceeds going towards the Jim Browne Foundation, was a nice touch, but it didn't make up for the disappointing golf experience. At $30 for 9 holes walking and $49 for 18 holes walking, it wasn't a bad deal, but I'd rather pay a bit more for a course that actually delivers. Maybe I just caught them on a bad day, but I won't be back to find out.
