June 06, 2025Disappointing Experience at KAHĀ 2025: Where Tradition Meets Disorganization
I'm still trying to process the mixed emotions I felt after attending KAHĀ 2025, an event I had been looking forward to for months. As a long-time enthusiast of Hawaiian culture and a beginner hula student, I was excited to learn from esteemed Kumu and Loea, and to connect with like-minded individuals who share my passion. Unfortunately, the event fell short of my expectations in several ways. Firstly, the organization of the workshops and performances was chaotic, with last-minute changes and cancellations that left many of us feeling frustrated and disappointed. I had been particularly looking forward to Loea Hula Leimomi Ho's workshop, but it was cancelled due to 'unforeseen circumstances' without any explanation or apology. The communication from the event staff was also lacking, with no clear instructions or updates provided to attendees. I felt like I was left to navigate the event on my own, which was overwhelming and stressful. Despite the rich cultural heritage and stunning performances, the event felt disorganized and lacking in aloha spirit. The Palace Station Hotel & Casino, while a convenient location, felt like an odd choice for an event celebrating Hawaiian culture, and the lack of traditional Hawaiian food options was also a disappointment. I understand that Hawaii Kaha is a non-profit organization and that they rely on donations and sponsorships to fulfill their mission. However, as someone who is passionate about preserving and promoting Hawaiian culture, I felt that the event could have been better executed with more attention to detail and a clearer commitment to the values of aloha, ohana, and maluhia. Perhaps with more support and resources, Hawaii Kaha can improve future events and provide a more meaningful and enriching experience for attendees.
