The Babson Historical Association, Inc. (BHA) is a unique organization that combines the preservation of historical artifacts, the celebration of family heritage, and the promotion of community among its members. Established in 1950 by Roger Ward Babson, the founder of Babson College in Wellesley, MA, the BHA is dedicated to maintaining the James Babson Museum, a small one-story brick structure filled with early American tools and furniture that is considered to be the oldest building and the first 'factory' on Cape Ann. The museum, built in 1658, showcases the cooperage shop that James Babson initiated on Cape Ann, marking the beginning of the barrel-making industry in the region. The BHA's mission extends beyond the museum, as it aims to conserve artifacts associated with the industry, support the legacy of James Babson descendants, and provide opportunities for Babsons from across the country to reconnect on a regular basis in Rockport. With 275 members from across the US and many foreign countries, the BHA has become a vibrant community that shares a common interest in preserving their family's history and cultural heritage. The organization has published numerous Babson genealogies, including the 2017 edition, which covers 15 generations of Babsons from 1637 to 2017 and breaks new ground by providing separate biographical sketches for all Babson women beginning with the 11th generation. The BHA also hosts reunions every five years, where members can gather to enjoy old-fashioned clambakes, share stories, and learn about prominent Babsons and their accomplishments. The next reunion is planned for Saturday, August 5, 2023, and promises to be an exciting event for all attendees.
