June 06, 2025Disappointing Experience with ALASA
I was really looking forward to being part of the Arts Leadership Alumni + Student Association (ALASA) community, given its mission to empower arts leaders and foster a fun, inclusive environment. Unfortunately, my experience was underwhelming. As a recent graduate of the University of Houston Master of Arts in Arts Leadership program, I expected more opportunities for professional development and networking. However, the events organized by ALASA seemed to cater more to current students than alumni, leaving me feeling disconnected. The 'community-driven' aspect that ALASA promotes didn't quite translate to my experience, as I found it challenging to engage with other members meaningfully. Perhaps my expectations were too high, given the organization's vision to nurture academic and professional value, but I genuinely believed that ALASA would offer more substantial support and resources for career growth. The values of Community, Learning, Inclusion, Responsibility, and Creativity that ALASA upholds are admirable, but in practice, I saw more emphasis on theoretical discussions than actionable steps towards making a positive impact on the Houston arts scene. I hope that in the future, ALASA will work towards creating more inclusive and beneficial experiences for all its members, regardless of their current student or alumni status.
