June 09, 2025Disillusioned with the 117 Preston/Westphal Army Cadet Corps
I'm not usually one to write reviews, but my experience with the 117 Preston/Westphal Army Cadet Corps was a major letdown. As a parent, I was initially excited for my 14-year-old to join, thinking it would be a great way for them to learn discipline, make friends, and develop leadership skills. Unfortunately, the reality was far from it. The weekly meetings at the North Preston Community Centre felt disorganized, with instructors who seemed more interested in yelling than actually teaching. The 'adventures' they promised were just glorified hikes with too much standing around. My kid was really looking forward to learning about first aid, camping, and survival skills, but those classes were consistently cancelled or postponed. The staff seemed overwhelmed and struggled to engage with the cadets. The 'community service projects' were just cleaning up trash in the park, which, while important, wasn't exactly what we signed up for. The whole thing felt like a chore, and my kid lost interest after a few months. For an organization that claims to foster camaraderie and teamwork, it was surprising to see how little effort was put into actually making the cadets feel like they were part of something meaningful. Maybe we just caught them on a bad year, but the lack of communication, poorly planned activities, and general sense of disorganization made us decide not to continue. If you're considering joining, I'd recommend looking into other, more organized groups in the area.
